Monday Musing: The Power of Your Voice
Be impeccable with your word.
Speak with integrity.
Say only what you mean.
Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.
Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
- Miguel Angel Ruiz
Have you ever spoken without thinking? Said you would do something when you really had no intention of doing so? Made a mean ‘joke’ about yourself, or someone else? Sometimes we give our mouths free reign without giving our brain time to catch up!
Try and marry up your brain wants to say and what your mouth is transmitting. Listen to what you are saying! What are you agreeing to? Only say what you mean, and what you will carry through with!
Remember that words and what we say have a huge effect on those around us. Thankfully it is a power we have control over. We can choose what we say and how we say it!
Unfortunately, a lot of us do not realize the power we have. We say mean things under the guise of ‘jokes’, we tease, we make fun of, we bully. Sometimes our power goes unused because we do not speak out when others are wielding this weapon. Because of this silence, harm is allowed to be done.
Be mindful of what comes out of your mouth, it is more powerful than you realize.
Challenge
Try and be aware of what you are saying for a whole week! Take the time to think about what comes out of your mouth. Was it truthful? Did you mean it? Can you stand by what you said with pride?
Try not to agree for the sake of agreeing. Do you actually agree with the comment? Do you need more information to understand properly? If so, ask! Or instead of agreeing, say “Oooh that’s an interesting point, I will need to look into it more!”
If you catch yourself speaking badly about yourself and others, stop. Words are powerful and can be damaging, even if it is ‘just a joke’.
Let us know how you go!
