Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect during an appointment?
We have many different treatment techniques available to address your specific situation, so the actual treatment differs from person to person. However, at the start of each appointment we spend some time chatting to find out how you have been going, then we will typically do a few checks to see how your body is responding, followed by treatment.
If it is your first appointment, we will spend more time talking through your issues and concerns, as well as performing a thorough examination. In most cases this is then followed by treatment.
What about EPC and/or DVA claims?
Yes, we accept Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan referrals from GPs, and are registered with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) to allow us to serve our veterans. Please call us if you would like further information about these types of appointments.
What are the risks?
Chiropractic treatment is considered to be very safe. At Hilton Chiropractic we also take the utmost precaution to ensure we choose a safe and effective treatment approach for you and your body.
The vast majority of side effects are mild and short-lived, such as achiness or stiffness following spinal manipulation (similar to after a massage). Uncommonly, symptoms may worsen following treatment. However, this is certainly an exception and not the norm. Serious side effects are extremely rare. Your chiropractor will discuss all of these risks in more detail at your appointment, and we are always happy to accommodate your own concerns and preferences.

Does it hurt?
Spinal manipulation (or adjustments) do not generally hurt. In some cases, where there are significantly irritated joints or tense muscles, the manipulation can cause momentary pain. When we work on releasing tension in muscles (e.g. trigger point therapy) and other soft tissues, there is typically some discomfort, just like when you get a massage. We will always work to ensure treatment is as comfortable for you as possible.
What is the cracking noise?
The ‘cracking’ or ‘popping’ noise you often hear during spinal manipulation (or adjustments) is quite normal and nothing to be concerned about. It is the same noise that occurs when ‘cracking’ the knuckles. Most joints in your body are called ‘synovial joints’, meaning they are surrounded by a capsule which is filled with a smooth fluid. This fluid lubricates the joint, and has various gases dissolved in it. An adjustment changes the pressure inside of the joint, causing the gases to come together suddenly and form a bubble. This is what creates the cracking noise, which we call a ‘cavitation’. This bubble then dissolves again over the next 20-30 minutes. It is not necessary to hear a cavitation for an adjustment to be successful.
What training do chiropractors have?
Chiropractors in Australia receive 5 years of full time study at university. All of our chiropractors at Hilton Chiropractic trained at Murdoch University. The course includes extensive training in human anatomy and physiology, physical examination, diagnosis, rehabilitation, and manual therapy including spinal manipulation. It also involves a strong clinical component where students treat real patients under close supervision before graduating.
Will I need to get x-rays?
We do not routinely send our patients for x-rays, unless there is a particular reason to do so. If this is the case, the reasons, pros and cons will be discussed with you at the time. We will generally refer you to a local bulk-billing radiology clinic to have any x-rays taken.
Can I claim on my private health cover?
Yes, we will provide you with a receipt that will allow you to claim directly with your private health care provider. We do not currently have a HICAPS machine to process claims for you.
